In January 2014 our experts and tunnel workers started working at project Bypass Schwarzkopftunnel in northern Bavaria. Schwarzkopftunnel, still in service for more than 160 years, will be replaced by a new bypass with 4 new tunnels. Three of them are excavated with the NATM by Euro Alliance Tunnels.
On July 10th, the first milestone was reached successfully: the break through of tunnel Hirschberg. The tunnel has two parallel one-track tubes. Because of very low overburden the northern tube will be excavated using the cut and cover method. The main part of the southern tube (350 from 525 meters) was excavated with the NATM. The cross section is 48 m2, maximal overburden 15 meters.
The challenging excavation works with blasting demonstrated the experience and quality of our personnel. Despite the very tight time schedule our experts excavated the NATM section of the southern tube at record speed in only 3 months. Simultaneously also the works at tunnel Falkenberg, with it´s 2.623 m the longest tunnel of the bypass, are proceeding.
