On July 2nd we celebrated the breakthrough of the Burgbergtunnel in Erlangen, Germany. The 306 m long tube with an excavated cross-section of about 130 m2 is located close to the old tunnel – the first Bavarian rail tunnel built already in 1844. After the completion, two two-track tunnels will accelerate the traffic speed for both, regional and long-distance trains.
The used excavation method was the NATM, driven through sandstone and claystone of the Middle Burgsandstein. Continous fluctuation of strength and deformability of the rock was a big challenge for our engineers and workers. With our experience the tube was excavated sucessfully and on time – the top-heading was completed in only 12 weeks.
The works will continue with the excavation of the bench. Finaly our engineers and workers will execute the construction of the inner lining shell with steel reinforced concrete
